The Lens That Taught Me to Slow Down

Carl Zeiss Milvus 85mm f/1.4

There are lenses that capture a scene.
And there are lenses that shape the way you see.

For my ongoing series Between Breaths, the Carl Zeiss Milvus 85mm f/1.4 has become more than a tool—it has become part of my creative process.

Its manual focus demands patience. There is no rush, no reliance on autofocus. Every frame begins with a conscious decision, slowing the act of photography until it feels almost meditative. That pace perfectly matches the quiet moments I seek in water.

What I love most is the way it renders light. Highlights remain soft without losing their brilliance, while shadows preserve an extraordinary depth. The transition from focus to blur feels natural rather than dramatic, allowing the subject to emerge gently instead of being separated aggressively from the background.

The lens is remarkably sharp, but its greatest strength isn’t resolution. It’s atmosphere.

When photographing water, reflections, and the delicate expression of a person suspended between movement and stillness, I don’t want clinical perfection. I want emotion. The Milvus delivers images that feel tangible yet poetic.

Many modern lenses are technically superior on paper.
Few have this much character.

For me, the Milvus 85mm isn’t simply my favorite portrait lens.

It’s one of the reasons Between Breaths looks the way it does.

“A lens that rewards patience with photographs that feel timeless.”

The Milvus 85mm doesn’t ask me to shoot faster. It asks me to see more carefully. Every image in Between Breaths begins with that pause.
